Suomi Siitake: Commercializing and Creating New Value from Spent Shiitake Mushroom Substrates
Suomi Siitake operates year-round, generating approximately 70,000–100,000 kilograms of spent mushroom substrate annually as a by-product of its shiitake production. Currently, this substrate is delivered to a nearby organic farm for use as a soil amendment, and the recycling process incurs costs for the company.
The challenge is to identify new and innovative ways to utilize these spent substrates. The goal is to find solutions that transform this side stream from a waste material into a valuable resource. In particular, Suomi Siitake is interested in ideas that could enable the substrate to be further processed into a commercially viable product or service.
Suomi Siitake Ltd. was established at the end of 2018. However, mushroom cultivation was by no means a new field for the company, as it was built on more than two decades of experience in this highly specialized production sector. Our production is certified and monitored according to organic standards, ensuring a natural, high-quality, and clean Finnish food product.
